Agents, Importers Groan under Tincan Island Poor Road Network

In spite of the promises of the government to alleviate the pains of ports and road users of the Apapa,Tincan Island axis, the promises have remained unfulfilled.
Although,there is ongoing construction at the Apapa Point Road,it remains at a snail speed while Tincan Island is left at its peril.
Gtech observed that the Tincan Island axis also leads to the International and domestic airports of the nation but stationary trucks and tankers have occupied the roads, while vehicular movement is almost impossible.
The road from Westminister bustop, which plays host to Ifeanyi Ubah’s Capital Oil company is ridden with gulleys, potholes and refuse bins till the end of the second gate of the Port.
Meanwhile, a major agenda of the TinCan Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is to generate more revenue for the country.it has become one of the major drivers of the nation’s economy, generating over N1 billion daily and contributing about N25 billion monthly, aside the Apapa Port that contributes about N30 billion to government coffers.
Gtechnews’s investigation revealed that the TinCan Island port generated N183 billion between January and August 2017.
Meanwhile, Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Godwin Eke, said that “The bids for the repair of the Apapa Oshodi/Tin Can Island Road was passing through the procurement process and that government was planning to reconstruct the network of roads on the Apapa/TinCan Island/Oshodi road corridor to reduce congestion to the barest minimum.
“We will carry out some palliatives as soon as the procurement process is concluded. The high water table in Apapa requires proper design and adoption of rigid pavement to ensure longevity of our roads,” Eke said.
