Google has announced that they’re laying off hundreds of employees across different teams. They’re letting go of people in their Voice Assistant unit, hardware team (responsible for Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit), augmented reality (AR) team, and central engineering team.
Google bought Fitbit a while back, but are still releasing new versions of their Pixel Watch, which competes with Fitbit and Apple Watch. Google wants to align their resources with their biggest product priorities.
They’re not disclosing the exact number of roles impacted, and it’s unclear how many people are part of the Google Assistant software and other teams.
Google plans to add generative AI capabilities to their virtual assistant, which could help with tasks like trip planning and email management.
