We Have Met the Enemy and He is Us

During your teen years, Eric Donaldson’s Land of my birth released in 1978 was one of your best songs without knowing that it was a kind of pledge until years later.

“Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, aah, aah, aah
This is the land of my birth; I say this is the land of my birth.
I say this is Jamaica, my Jamaica, the land of my birth.
I will never leave her shores, I will never run away.…”

However, in this context Nigeria is the land of your birth even if most people bear citizenship of another country, the land of birth is where you are a first class citizen. Any other country accepts you as an unwritten second class citizen. If you know, you know.

Most people would ordinarily not leave Nigeria, the giant of Africa, the current Israel, blessed by God with massive population but how do you explain insecurity, persecution, serial killing, kidnapping and senseless killings with whatever undertone that people have to go through.

Everyone is afraid to travel. International news keep updating of insecurities in Nigeria and the first thing you ask your family is to run for help to the embassy if the centre cannot hold in Nigeria.

No one is willing to say the truth any more out of fear because those who dared to speak have their secrets exposed too.

Where and how did Nigeria get to where it is today? Insurgents killed too many people including innocent toddlers, youths and pregnant women.

Though an aide said recently that it’s not as if it was the first time killings have been reported, why make noise about the recent ones. And you are like, like seriously?

One of the books in the Holy Book (2 Samuel 5:6), said the inhabitants of the Land spoke to David saying, you cannot come in here, even the blind and the lame can stop you.

No one can stop anything in Nigeria now unlike the boldness in those people. The only person who can do something to arrest the killing spree is God of all flesh. Everyone shivers to their pants because they have met the enemy and he is us.

Insurgents do not just start in a day just like armed robbers do not operate if there is no insider.

Bomb blast and massacre started like a drop of water until it rippled. In your over 40 years, the death toll recorded in Nigeria must have surpassed that of the first and second world war.

Yet the mighty and the powerful looked away possibly because of pledge and alliance laced with an undertone.

Someone in power was allegedly an extremist who had ordered the killing of a 400 level undergraduate through Fatwa, made series of extreme pronouncement and yet got pardoned because it was done when he was young.

Unknown sin. You hear. However, in the court of law ignorance is no excuse. Anyways, once a soldier is always said to be a soldier.

George Orwell’s allegorical novel Animal Farm, said ‘All animals are equal but some are more equal than others’, especially those important ones who are personal sheikh, pastors and prayer partners to the powers that be.

The media are also not helping matters; some of them would air messages from insurgents. To prove what? It only showed narrow-mindedness and not objectivity.

Like your friend, Andrea Weaver said in passing, “Don’t be deceived, most media houses in your country could be on the insurgent’s payroll. Before you know it, everyone would be wiped of except whoever cooperates”.

Weaver has always been an alarmist but this particular statement hits home to the truth.

A viral video of two innocent and adorable children made yours truly weep terribly for Nigeria. As little as these children, they have been exposed to fear and may be affected with Post Traumatic Syndrome Disorder (PTSD), if care is not taken.

There is no country without its bullshit but where countries start issuing advisory statements to their citizens to be careful of going to Nigeria because of killings and kidnapping, and then it calls for serious security scrutiny.

Israel, Russia, China and the United States of America have never called for security help but Nigeria has done so severally. The last before now, the US armies went in pursue of insurgents and allegedly turned back after sometime because they met met the enemy and He is Nigerian.

Why can’t love reign supreme? During the week, Senator Smart Adeyemi, who represents Kogi West, noted that the nation’s security had failed woefully.

Jeaniene Frost, an American fantasy author, known for her work on the New York Times and USA Today bestselling Night Huntress series and the Night Huntress World novels said in one of her books,”Time has no dominion over love. Love is the only thing that transcends time”.

See you next week and please stay safe.
