Jose Feliciano’s Christmas song remains your best Christmas song and Eureka! Christmas is here again after everything the world has been through this year. Christmas day has a special feel always. Feels different and still do. This special day makes everyone scamper to get something nice or gifts for themselves.
Around this time many decades ago, your mother would have taken your shoe measurement with a broom stick and would still purchase an oversize shoe and readymade dress from the local market.
In Africa, especially Nigeria, most parents like to buy oversized clothing and shoes owing to the belief that children grow very fast.
Many families would start the preparation for the great day several months ahead of it. While some less privileged families only get to eat rice on December 25 with soda (Soft drinks).
The book: ‘Without a silver spoon’ as captured by Mr. Eddie Iroh captured the stark reality of those days.
Only on Christmas day can children ‘show-off their readymade clothes and shoes and others who have theirs styled by Obiomas (coinage for mobile tailors in those days) are not left out.
Then Christmas was truly a day of fun.
Fast forward to the year 2020, which almost disrupted artificial intelligence, a year that is tantamount to an unchallengeable warrior because of the pandemic. This year has humbled both the old and young. It caught the rich, poor, mighty and homeless unawares just like that.
The pandemic year that took the lives of millions of people away without the need for global environmental sanitation.
The year of great tribulation for world economies. And also the year for some countries to pen robs monies and hoard products meant for the upkeep of their subjects.
The second wave of Covid-19 is roaring, yet Christmas day is fast approaching.
In some countries, no gatherings, no hugs. Stay at home is the order. Go out when necessary and mask up. But of course, you cannot mask up hunger. The purchasing power of most families is nonexistent and can barely purchase new things. Others are barely surviving.
This year’s Christmas is fast approaching, let’s be our brothers keeper. Reach out to the less privilege in your neighborhood.
In the spirit of Christmas, show some love by being the needed Santa without expecting returns or reward. Someone on your street may just need that duvet, jacket or shoes that you no longer want. That foot that you want thrash in the bin can be of immense help to some.
We all need each other to lean on this Christmas.
