NCC Boss Receives Telecoms Man Of The year Award

…Promises to auction spectrum soon

The Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), has honoured the Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta as the Telecom Man of the Year. According to the organiser, the EVC Danbatta was presented the award on account of his contributions to the development of the telecom sector including improved broadband penetration, contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), establishment and improvement of corporate governance.
The award presentation was done in Lagos during the maiden Nigeria Tech Innovation and Telecom Awards 2017(NTITA).
On receiving the award, Danbatta said that spectrum was a critical mobile infrastructure. And that the commission would soon auction spectrum.
The EVC said that NCC would ensure it provides the required frequency spectrum capacity needed for broadband deployment.
He disclosed that process for new spectrum auctions are underway and assignments to drive mobile and wireless broadband is ongoing.
Said he: ”The commission will facilitate the re-farming of existing spectrum held by operators to provide broadband services without impacting their Quality of Service (QoS) delivery.
”We will auction the 2.5/2.6 Gigahertz (GHz) spectrum for 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) capacity requirements”.
The EVC boss also added that the commission would auction the 700 MHz band once available, “For 4G LTE coverage requirements and will open up and assign other spectrum bands in an open and transparent manner,” he said.
At the event, over 25 awards  in various categories were given out and these includes the Regulator of the Year for NCC, MTN Nigeria : Customer experience of the year, 4G LTE,  mobile operator of the year and innovative project of the year (Lumus Mobile Electricity), Airtel bagged three awards; Telecom CEO of the Year Award, CSR initiative of the year and Telecom marketing company of the Year and  Vodacom also went away with three awards:Telecom business of the year, IOT, and enterprise solutions of the Year.
Others include,Lifetime achievement award, former EVC of NCC,  Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, ICT Entrepreneur of the year, CEO of VDT, Mr. Abiodun Omoniyi, Special recognition award for promotion NG, NIRA, Woman in Technology award, CEO of MainOne, Ms Funke Opeke and Special recognition for promoting telecom industry, ATCON President, Mr. Olusola Teniola.
