President of Nigeria Internet Registration Association, NIRA, Reverend Sunday Folayan said in Lagos that it was high time to adopt .NG as a national identity because the internet would take over the world by 2020.
According to him, .ng would bring about growth in the nation, and boost the revenue being generated from the use of .NG, while citing Germany as an example.
This, he disclosed at an executive media training held at the NIRA house in Surulere .Tagged;  ‘A world of opportunities.
Managing Director, IXPN, Mr. Mohammed Rudman also gave an overview of Domain Name System (DNS) industry and local hosting. He also touched on the history or invention of telephone and internet. He said that telephone was invented by Alex Graham in 1876. Before the telephone, Switch is what was being used in the early days for communication.
Rudman said that the word Internet was driven from a Greek word Inter and Network. It was invented on October 29, 1969, since then the internet has grown in an immense number. Over 3.2billion people use internet worldwide.
Former CPN registrar and Dean of NIRA Academy and Resource Centre, Mr Sikiru Shehu said that Nigerian economy would enhance through the use of the .NG as “Our domain name in our businesses. Nigeria is still considered to have the biggest economy in Africa. We are rich in resources such as oil and 153 in United Nation’s human development index”.
Buttressing his point, Head, Legal Service and Board Matters Unit, Nitda, Emmanuel Edet said, brand protection and its trademarks on the internet needs to be protected. He gave reasons, saying ,that “Brand protection and trade marks on internet is very essential in safe guarding of your product name, symbol, design and term”.
Edet maintained that trademark and domain are internationally in nature, trademark being under law policies whereas domain is under administrative policies.
