Computer Village has become the hub for all Information Technology, IT related products. And it is regarded by international observers as the best Information and Communication Technology, ICT market in West Africa.
Long before the Ikeja business district became popular, Alli street , Tinubu axis and Saka Tinubu on Victoria Island were the first markets for these products. But along the line, some of these traders started migrating to Awolowo Road, Ikeja and Otigba thereafter.
With the proliferation of several business units within Computer Village, the Tinubu led administration set in motion to relocate the dealers to a much more bigger space in Kantagwa, along Abule Egba in Lagos. The past executive of the Computer and Allied Products Dealers Association of Nigeria , CAPDAN led by Mr Tunji Balogun supported the relocation but till date the market is still located in Ikeja.
Several business owners have invested hugely in Computer Village and asking them to relocate may become a hill task.
Analysts argue that even if Computer Village relocates, will the market share also move along with it?. Almost all neighbouring countries are used to the Ikeja business district and the dealers may just but lose huge money.
3. Symbiotic Benefit
Ikeja is more centralised for IT products and It is an opportunity for the state government to have an edge in the ICT sector. Relocating to Katangwa, a land between Lagos and Ogun would hinder Lagos State from having that edge.
The current location of the Computer Village is central and easily accessible unlike Kantagwa. Most dealers would prefer to make their mega bucks in their current location than be bothered to relocate to a new territory all together.
